Horse Coaltion - Help Spread the Word
Unwanted Horse Coaltion - Help Spread the Word
Horse Council 9/10/2009

The Unwanted Horse Coalition needs your help in continuing to spread the word about the problem of unwanted horses and owner responsibility. The UHC’s recently-released 2009 Unwanted Horses Survey, which can be downloaded from the UHC website at http://www.unwantedhorsecoalition.org found that the overwhelming majority of those who took the survey perceived the problem of unwanted horses to be growing and that there is a continuing need for more owner education.

You can help meet that goal. The UHC has available free educational materials, a website, public service ads, and a message – “Own Responsibly.” But we need your help to disseminate these materials.

Please help the UHC by taking the following actions:
  • Passing out the UHC materials at your member events, annual conferences and other relevant places. The materials include the UHC Unwanted Horses brochure, the Own Responsibly flyer, as well as a 30 page handbook on “Owning Responsibly.” The UHC can provide these materials for you or you may download them from the UHC website at: www.unwantedhorsecoalition.org

  • · Adding the www.unwantedhorsecoalition.org link to your site along with our logo and/or banner. We have both a banner and a logo to provide you with.

  • · Help us to pass along these actions to your organization’s members and encourage them to contact the UHC to ask how they can help spread the UHC to spread the word on “Owning Responsibly.”

We ask that your organization designate a person to be a liaison to the UHC to help “Spread the Word” about the problem of the unwanted horse and the efforts of the UHC. Please let us know who that person is, so we can include them in our email distribution list for information.

For all information and responses to this memo, please contact UHC Director, Ericka Caslin, ecaslin@horsecouncil.org / (202) 296-4031

For your information, we have made a change to the manner in which purses are distributed. This change will leave owners in a better position than the previous method did.

Starting with races on February 11th, only the net amount paid to owners will be held until purse money is released, as opposed to the gross amount. For example, under the old method, if an owner won a race where their share was $10,000, the entire $10,000 would be held, but the $1,000 would automatically have been paid to the jockey. That $1,000 would have to be paid out of the owner's previous winnings and only recouped after the purse money was released. It would leave the owner's account short money until the purse was ultimately released.

Under the new method, an owner winning $10,000 will only have $9,000 of this held for him. The jock will still be paid the $1,000, but the owner will not have to front this money out of previous winnings. Once the purse is released, the owner would have the $9,000 credited to their account. Not fronting the money out of prior earnings effectively gives the owner free use of that $1,000 between the time the race is run and the time the purse is released.

We felt this was much fairer to the horsemen and paid InCompass the programming fees to get this changed.
